There are many reasons why the dangers of COVID-19 seemed to sneak up on the U.S. Perhaps one of the most compelling reasons why COVID-19 did not initially raise alarms was the idea that it only impacted people of advanced age, with multiple conditions, or who were considered medically fragile.
